20 Days of Puzzles: A Review

After several years of thinking and talking about making a Bible-teaching computer game, this week I reached my first major milestone: a document describing the complete story and all of the puzzles. Here are a few statistics for you:

  • 3 acts
  • 26 pages
  • 56 puzzles
  • 60 characters
  • 10,000 words

I’m very grateful to God for getting me through the last month or so – it’s been incredibly helpful and motivating to me to have set myself this little deadline, but quite gruelling towards the end and it’s nice to be able to chill out a bit now and put a bit of distance between me and what I’ve written.

What Next?

The big question everybody keeps asking me now is “so what comes next?”. I read quite a helpful interview with Ron Gilbert not so long ago about the making of Monkey Island. After they had designed all of the story, they then proceeded to mock up a rough version of the game as quickly as possible, using temporary artwork and so on, so that they could actually play the thing and get a feel for what worked and what didn’t, where the pacing was off and where they needed to chop things out or add things in. I’m quite excited by this prospect, as I think it would both be really rewarding (after years of having absolutely nothing to show for myself!) and a good opportunity to refine my engine and put it to the test in a real game situation.
